Old School Special Returns – Now Available in Limited Edition Bottles

Back by popular demand, Old School Special makes its much-anticipated return this summer – and this time, it’s not just on tap. For the first time ever, we’ve released a limited run of bottles available exclusively through our online shop and selected retailers. Once they’re gone, they’re gone!

This seasonal favourite brings together the best of British bitter with a fresh, hoppy twist – the latest creation in our celebrated Brewer Signature range.

Few know their ale like our Brewing Manager, Bruce Ash. With more than 30 years at Woodforde’s and the rare distinction of being one of just 29 accredited beer sommeliers in the UK (a title he earned in 2013), Bruce has perfected the art – and the science – of crafting the ultimate pint.

With Old School Special, Bruce has created a 4.7% English pale ale that pays homage to the rich tradition of British brewing, while embracing the floral, aromatic notes today’s drinkers love.

“There are so many hoppy beers around at the moment and they’re all fantastic,” Bruce said. “Beers tend to go in cycles – but I think there’s always a place at the bar for a proper bitter, and that’s what I wanted to create.

Old School Special is copper in colour, with a smooth, rounded sweetness from the malts. The hops give it a distinctive herbal, minty aroma that sets it apart.”

Bruce has been with us since 1987 and has earned multiple awards both for his brews and his personal contributions to British beer.

“I’ve always been passionate about beer,” he said. “There’s nothing better than seeing someone enjoy a pint you’ve brewed. It’s a part of me – from choosing the right hops and malts, to that final satisfying pint pulled in the pub.”
